Singapore travellers are rejoicing as payment options in China become more accessible and cost-effective. The recent expansion of payment methods, particularly the ability to remit funds directly from bank accounts to e-wallets like WeChat Pay, has been a game-changer. This development eliminates the need for travellers to incur additional fees when using their Singapore-issued debit cards linked to these e-wallets.
Victoria Goh, an account manager who travels to China frequently, has been a long-time user of WeChat Pay. However, she and many others were previously burdened by a 3% fee on transactions exceeding 200 yuan. This fee was levied by WeChat Pay when using Singapore-issued debit cards to top up the e-wallet. Now, with the new remittance service, Goh and other DBS Bank users can transfer funds directly to their WeChat Pay wallets without any extra charges.
This shift in payment methods is a significant step forward, especially for those who frequently travel to China. Financial adviser Ryan Lok, who has used this new feature during his work trips, highlights the financial benefits. He notes that paying an extra 3% on a $1,000 bill is a substantial amount, but on a $200 bill, it's less noticeable. This change is particularly beneficial for those who often cover expenses for meals and drinks with friends and clients.
The convenience of scanning merchant QR codes through e-wallets like WeChat Pay and AliPay is a common trend in China. Most shops do not accept foreign bank-issued credit cards, making QR code scanning the primary mode of payment. Media professional Carol Ang, who has faced payment issues during her trips, appreciates the new remittance feature as a handy backup plan. She often carries cash due to the possibility of payment failures, especially at smaller food stalls.
The expansion of payment options is a result of collaboration between Chinese payment giant TenPay Global and various banks. DBS is one of 60 major banks globally that TenPay Global works with to enable cross-border remittance for non-Chinese citizens. OCBC Bank has also been instrumental in this process, allowing Singapore customers to scan UnionPay and Alipay QR codes since 2023 and 2024, respectively. The recent addition of WeChat Pay QR codes has further enhanced the convenience of OCBC's Scan & Pay feature in China.
The increasing ease of payment in China is a significant development for travellers and businesses alike. It not only simplifies transactions but also reduces the financial burden associated with using foreign bank-issued cards. As the payment landscape continues to evolve, travellers can look forward to more seamless and cost-effective experiences in China.
